Carafe, Jug and Fruit Bowl (Carafon, pot et compotier)

Carafe, Jug, and Fruit Bowl shows an earlier stage of Picasso’s style of analytic cubism. Surfaces of the still life are broken up into sharply defined planes, but are not quite elaborately fragmented. Rather, their forms still retain an illusion of both volume and perspective. Each form is dramatically shortened, but is not obliterated. While Picasso wanted to drastically change the way in which a simple still-life was portrayed, it is evident that he still wanted his work to be distinguishable to his audience.
