Landscape at Céret (Paysage de Céret)

Picasso painted Landscape at Céret summer during the summer of 1911, when his developments of Cubism were at their peak in development. Picasso had been studying under the artists Georges Braque for years, resulting in specific Cubist elements evident in this work. The muted earthy tones, schematized stairways, and arched window configurations serve as visual cues that must be conceptualized by the viewer of the work. As with all Cubist works, this painting must be “thought” as much as “seen” in its entirety; one must truly contemplate the landscape, emotions, and thoughts behind it.
