Two Doves with Wings Spread (Deux pigeons aux ailes déployées)

The years and events leading up to this paintings production mark the point of departure for the last phases of Picasso’s artistic career. This work was completed while Picasso was staying at La Californie, where he had built a dovecote on the third-floor balcony. Doves and pigeons are incorporated in several works in Picasso’s oeuvre and, interestingly, in that of his father. The brushstrokes that are sometimes stenographic and abbreviated or frequently thick and flowing serves as a continuation of the Picasso’s lifelong challenge to staying true to one, specific stylistic convention. Additionally, this painting is evidence of the artist’s need to convey vitality, liberation, and the desire to make fewer decisions – to be spontaneous and free.
